Musicologist, Educator, Multi-Instrumentalist

Andrew Ginzel is a historical musicologist, educator, and multi-instrumentalist based in San Diego, California. A scholar of American popular music, he specializes in 20th-century rock and folk traditions, with a focus on their cultural and historical significance. His research examines how California’s regional music shaped the counterculture of the 1960s and 1970s, exploring how sounds and cultural movements have contributed to American identity, cultural memory, and enduring legacies in contemporary music and culture. He currently teaches at Point Loma Nazarene University as an adjunct professor of composition.

Originally from the Central Illinois area, he moved to San Diego when he started high school. He is working on his M.A. in Musicology at San Diego State University (2025) and holds a B.A. in Commercial Music Composition and Production from Point Loma Nazarene University (2022).

Andrew is a member of the American Musicological Society, the Society for American Music, The College Music Society, and the MIDI Association. He is an active member of BMI and was a Student Ambassador for The Mechanical Licensing Collective.
